This is not one of our normal L&D Sessions! It is part of a research project – as detailed below. There’s also a survey (the link is in your email) which needs to be completed as well. Thanks!
Title of project: From Theory to Impact: Implementing AI Learning Tools in New Zealand’s Community Sector
My name is Mike Curry, and I am currently studying towards a Master of Professional Practice through Capable NZ, Otago Polytechnic.
I have the opportunity to contribute significantly to our understanding of AI-powered chatbots for learning purposes within non-profits in New Zealand. There is currently minimal research in this fast-moving area, and unrealised potential for improved learning outcomes along with time-savings for community organisations.
Your involvement will contribute to guidance, frameworks, and other resources which empower non-profits to implement similar projects of their own.
Please explore the information below.
Aim of research project
This research project examines the effectiveness of an AI-based learning chatbot which will inform the creation of guidance for the community sector on implementing similar projects.
What type of participants are being sought?
Participants must be:
- Adults over 18 years of age
- Able to access a computer with an internet connection
How will potential participants be identified and accessed?
You have been identified as a person who undertakes professional development with FinCap, and can be contacted by email.
What will participation involve?
Should you agree to take part in this project you will be asked to complete two tasks:
- Interact with an AI-powered educational chatbot for the purposes of professional development. This will occur online at your convenience before 17 October 2025. It may take 2-4 hours to complete in total.
- Complete an online survey providing feedback on your experience before 17 October 2025. The survey may take 15-25 minutes to complete.
How will confidentiality and/or anonymity be protected?
You will be asked to use a unique ID number for both tasks.
Only FinCap knows your ID number; this is not shared with me as researcher.
Any information in the responses will be removed if it could identify a person.
No individuals are identified by their real names in the final report; any responses included in the report are attributed to pseudonyms.
No organisations are identified in the final report.
You may request a copy of the results of the project. This will be available via CURRMD1@student.op.ac.nz
Can participants change their minds and withdraw from the project?
You can decline to participate without any disadvantage to yourself.
If you choose to participate, you can stop participating in the project without giving reasons for your withdrawal. You may withdraw any time prior to submitting your responses to the survey by simply notifying FinCap that you wish to withdraw.
You can refuse to answer any particular survey question.
What data or information will be collected and how will it be used?
Data will be collected in two forms:
- Your interaction with the AI-powered chatbot. The transcript of your interaction will be analysed to look at:
- How the instructions provided to the AI by the researcher were applied
- The effectiveness of the learning experience
- How the chatbot responded to cultural context clues
- The overall performance of the chatbot as a learning tool.
- Your survey responses. Your responses will be both qualitative and quantitative in nature, allowing for deep analysis of your individual perspective and comparison with the perspectives of other learners.
The chatbot is hosted on Chatling.ai, an online tool for creating chatbots. Chatling.ai does not use conversations to retrain models or share user data externally. While every care is taken to protect your privacy, it is important to note that generative AI systems cannot guarantee absolute confidentiality of responses. All transcripts will be de-identified before analysis, and no individuals or organisations will be named in reports. Pseudonyms may be used where appropriate.
Results of this project may be published in the form of: guidelines and resources for people undertaking similar projects in the community sector, my masters project report, potentially conference presentations, and potentially website articles. Any data included will in no way be linked to any specific participant.
You may request a copy of the results of the project and it will be available from FinCap.
Data storage
The data collected will be securely stored in such a way that only the researcher will have access to it. The data will be stored on the researcher’s laptop protected by biometrics and which only they have access to. At the end of the project any personal information or any raw data on which the results are based will be destroyed.
All other data will be stored on the Otago Polytechnic research storage. It will be disposed of after seven (7) years, by the organisational management system according to Institutional policy and the relevant legislation.

I know that:
- My participation in the project is entirely voluntary and I am free to refuse to answer any particular question.
- While Chatling.ai (the platform used to create the chatbot) does not use these interactions for training or external purposes, generative AI tools cannot guarantee absolute privacy.
- I am free to stop participating at any time prior to submitting my responses to the survey.
- I can choose to withdraw from the research without giving reasons and without any disadvantage.
- I cannot withdraw the information I have submitted after I have responded to the online survey.
- At the end of the project any personal information or any raw data on which the results are based will be destroyed. All other data will be stored on the Otago Polytechnic research data repository. It will be disposed of after seven (7) years, by the organisational management system according to Institutional policy and the relevant storage acts.
