You’re working for an organisation committed to making a difference for your community. That’s why you’re involved in the community sector. But:
Part of your community can’t hear you.
There are around 11,000 Deaf people who communicate primarily in New Zealand Sign Language (NZSL) . You can make Deaf people feel welcome at your organisation, even without becoming fluent in NZSL.
This course will help your organisation become more inclusive and demonstrate manaakitanga by identifying ways to make your deaf clients welcome, setting the scene for a meaningful and effective communication.
By the end of this course you will be able to:
- Explain what makes the Deaf community unique
- Identify ways to make Deaf clients feel comfortable
- Sign some basic signs
- Book an interpreter
- Understand why other organisations have started learning NZSL
- Identify ways to learn more about Deaf culture / NZSL
