Use the “save” and “save as” options

When you open Word, you will see an option to open a “Blank document”.

When you open Word you can choose “Blank document”

Click on “Blank workbook” and you’ll see an empty page. This is where we’re going to learn some basic Word skills.

This is a blank Word document.

Practice point: Open a blank document.

Later, if you’re already using Word and want to create a new document, go to File > New.

You can have several Word documents open at the same time, if you wish.

Save and Save As

When you wish to save your document, go to File > Save or File > Save As.

File > Save or Save As
  • Save = the first time you click Save, you’ll be asked where to save your document. From then on, each time you click Save it will save the document to that same place.
  • Save As = allows you to choose a different place to save your file. This is particularly useful when you’ve made changes to your original document and want to save the new document without overwriting the original.

Practice point: Save your Word document somewhere you can find it later.
