Human Dignity

Human dignity is the inherent worth and value of every individual, which entitles them to be treated with respect regardless of their circumstances. It is the foundation of human rights and is considered a basic necessity for a just society. Respecting human dignity means recognising each person as a unique individual with inherent worth and ensuring they have the fundamental conditions for a meaningful existence.
We recognise and uphold the inherent dignity, worth, and potential of every person, regardless of their financial circumstances, background, or identity.
In practice, this means:
- treating all clients with respect, compassion, and without judgement
- recognising that financial difficulties do not diminish a person’s worth or capabilities
- honouring diverse cultural values, beliefs, and practices around money and financial management
- supporting clients’ right to make autonomous decisions about their financial future.
Before we can truly honour the dignity and cultural values of others, we must first examine our own biases, assumptions, and cultural understanding. Our whakataukī reminds us that self-awareness and personal reflection are foundational to providing respectful, culturally responsive service.
