Collaboration and Referral

Collaboration and referral involve working with clients, whānau, and other professionals to provide holistic, effective, and safe financial mentoring support. It ensures clients receive the expertise and resources they need.

Quality collaboration includes working in partnership with clients, whānau, and communities to plan and achieve financial goals and engaging with other professionals (social workers, health providers, legal advisors) to address interconnected needs.

Referral helps identify when a client’s needs exceed the mentor’s expertise or scope and connects clients with specialist services, such as counselling, or legal assistance. These need to be timely, appropriate, and culturally responsive.

As a financial mentor you will:

  • work collaboratively with other professionals and service providers
  • make appropriate referrals when clients require specialised support
  • maintain knowledge of local services and referral pathways; and
  • follow up on referrals to ensure clients receive appropriate support.

Collaboration and referrals ensure financial mentors provide comprehensive, client-focused support, linking clients with the right resources while maintaining partnerships and empowering client self-determination.
