What is Word, and why is it useful?
Welcome !
Hello! Welcome to this course about Word basics.
The course starts slowly and builds logically into skills that will save you time and effort. But, it’s not intended to cover everything Word can do – not by a long shot. This is an introduction course. If you’ve never used Word before this will give you a good overview of some of the essential skills. And if you have used Word before, this course will ensure you have a solid platform for learning more.
By the end you will have some newfound skills and confidence in using Word.
Time to get going!

How to approach this course
This course is going to introduce you to 7 essential Word skills. Each skill is broken down into small chunks.
So that you can follow along, we suggest you have Word open at the same time.
You might already know some of the things covered in this course – and it’s okay to skip past those sections. But, we suggest that when you see “practice points” like the example below, you stop and actually do the practice exercise.
Practice point: This is an example practice point. When you see these, you should stop and do the practice exercise.
Each essential Word skill is explained in roughly the same way:
- An explanation of why this is important to know
- A video demonstration of the skill
